Mechanical Engineer Postdoctoral Fellow (Building Technology and Urban Systems)

Berkeley Lab’s Whole Building Systems Department (WBS) of the Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer Postdoctoral Fellow.

You will contribute to studies including, but not limited to: development of smart ventilation systems including sensors, controls and hardware, improved understanding of the effect of indoor pollutants on occupant health, improved understanding of thermal and moisture performance of residences.


What You Will Do:

  • Design and conduct research on ventilation, building energy efficiency and indoor air quality (IAQ), including field measurements, the use modeling and computer simulations, and development of simplified models and correlations.

  • Design and carry out statistical analyses of data and develop graphical methods to display results for further in-depth review and analysis by staff scientists.

  • Review published literature, identify and evaluate unpublished sources of information, and analyze available data to identify and conduct hazard and risk assessments for air pollutants emitted by residential indoor sources.

  • Communicate research results through technical documents and presentations at technical meetings.

  • Simulation of thermal, moisture and IAQ performance of buildings.

  • Contribute to the development of guidelines, standards and codes related to residential energy and IAQ performance

  • Participate in professional scientific activities, e.g., reviews of papers, research proposals, etc.

  • Interact with federal and California state energy and environmental agencies including DOE, EPA, CEC, and ARB.

  • Communicate progress/results in presentations and publications.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Support and contribute to the development of research project ideas and proposals.

  • Provide support to other projects at LBNL, such as interfacing with other air quality, thermal distribution, building diagnostics/commissioning, and building energy technologies.


What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in relevant science or engineering field or equivalent.

  • Knowledgeable in the fields of ventilation, building energy performance, indoor air quality, building heating and cooling systems, and building physics.

  • Ability to undertake critical thinking and communicate results.

  • General knowledge of thermodynamics, heat/mass transfer, health or fluid mechanics principles applicable to buildings.

  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality technical publications.

  • Must have excellent communication skills.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of building industry practices and relevant professional societies.

  • Knowledge of residential indoor air quality, ventilation systems, air leakage and air distribution including the principles behind HVAC system operation and methods of measurement, modeling, and analysis.

  • Understanding of the general principles of ventilation and infiltration as they relate to indoor air quality and energy use in a wide variety of buildings.

  • Familiarity with building energy and IAQ simulation and modeling.

  • This is a 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 of years paid postdoctoral experience.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on student/postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position requires completion of a background check.
